Neely’s Gifted 1st Graders Explore the Life Cycle of Chickens
Our 1st Grade Gifted Enrichment students recently had an exciting hands-on science experience as they explored the complete life cycle of chickens through a classroom incubation project. Demonstrating the curiosity and perseverance of true Neely Knights, students carefully incubated twelve eggs and were thrilled when six of them successfully hatched into fluffy black and yellow chicks.
Throughout the three-week incubation period, students embraced the role of young scientists. They engaged in activities that encouraged observation, questioning, and critical thinking. Students watched educational videos to learn how chicken embryos develop inside the egg and used candling—shining a bright light through the eggs—to observe the embryos and track their growth at different stages.
When several eggs did not hatch, our young Knights approached the experience with curiosity and a growth mindset. They carefully examined the eggs to see how far development had progressed and compared their observations with the stages they had studied. This thoughtful investigation sparked meaningful discussion and deeper understanding of the life cycle.
This engaging, hands-on project allowed students to apply curiosity, inquiry, and perseverance. Experiences like this bring science to life and inspire our Knights to continue exploring, questioning, and discovering the world around them.
